Right Hemisphere Memory Bias Does Not Extend to Involuntary Memories for Negative Scenes

چکیده

Attention is unequally distributed across the visual field. Due to greater right than left hemisphere activation for visuospatial attention, people attend slightly more side. As a result, voluntarily remember stimuli better when it first appears in But does this effect—termed memory bias—also enhance involuntary memory? We manipulated presentation location of 100 highly negative images (chosen increase likelihood that participants would experience any memories) three conditions: predominantly leftward (right bias), rightward (left or equally both fields (bilateral). measured subsequent memories immediately and 3 days after encoding. Contrary predictions, biased hemispheric processing did not affect short- long-term frequency duration. Future research should measure differences at retrieval, rather just

A bias for the female face in the right hemisphere.

In the present study we assessed the contribution of the two hemispheres to the attribution of gender of faces in male and female observers. Normal and chimeric faces were presented in their canonical orientation and upside-down in a tachistoscopic paradigm. Chimeric faces were composed of two halves (left and right) obtained from photos of individuals of the same sex or from individuals of dif...

Does implicit memory extend to legal and illegal nonwords?

In 4 experiments, implicit and explicit memory for words and nonwords were compared. In Experiments 1-2 memory for words and legal nonwords (e.g., kers) was assessed with an identification (implicit) and a recognition (explicit) memory task: Robust priming was obtained for both words and nonwords, and the priming effects dissociated from explicit memory following a levels-of-processing manipula...

The right hemisphere supports but does not replace left hemisphere auditory function in patients with persisting aphasia.

In this study, we used magnetoencephalography and a mismatch paradigm to investigate speech processing in stroke patients with auditory comprehension deficits and age-matched control subjects. We probed connectivity within and between the two temporal lobes in response to phonemic (different word) and acoustic (same word) oddballs using dynamic causal modelling. We found stronger modulation of ...

Involuntary memories and restrained eating.

Most involuntary memories are elicited by external cues (e.g., smells, sounds) that have unique associations with specific memories (Berntsen's cue-retrieval hypothesis), but involuntary memories can sometimes be elicited by weak, even imperceptible, cues that raise the activation level of an already primed memory (Berntsen's motivation-priming hypothesis) to also reach conscious awareness duri...
